
What is insignia? 3 Best Meanings & Examples
In general, Insignia is used for the object which shows some special kind of relationship with particular organization.
The word “Insignia” is used for different companies of particular trade or it is basically a military word where it is being used for different signs representing something special branch of Pakistan Defence Forces.
In military forces, Insignia is being used at uniform or clothes having particular design or shape for showing some relationship with certain branch of Pakistan Defence Forces.
Insignia may also be used in both civil and military organizations like US Army, Royal Air Force, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Army or Pakistan Navy.
Definition of Insignia
There are three best definitions of Insignia that we may recognize the Insignia used by any person;
- It is defined as “The particular object showing at the chest area on particular uniform”.
- It is defined as, “An object showing particular rank, rate, or designation”.
- It is defined as, “A mark or particular rank assigned to any person for distinguishing from others”.
There is some difference between Insignia, Bars, Badges and Emblem;
Insignia:

- Bars are also called service bars showing total service of the personnel who is spent in a particular organization. Bars represents the length of total service. Examples of Bars or Strips are given below:




Badges:
- Badges are usually used at the Caps or at the Shoulders of the Uniform. It may be a sign of particular object, building, animal or words showing strength of power. Examples of Badges are given below:




Emblem:
- “A logo or trade mark that represent a particular organization”




Synonyms of the word “Insignia”
Following words have been given as Synonym of the above word which have been used frequently;
- Ensign: “A national flag which is being displayed on ships and fighting aircrafts showing special branch or unit of the defence force”
- Emblem: “A symbol showing a logo or trademark”
- Crest: “A sign of Helmet or its Apex”
- Medal: “A metal piece stamped with some device which is being used as remembrance or for an object of veneration”
- Stripe: “A thin line showing some kind of experience”
- Decoration: “An act, decorating art, or a technique of showing some specific thing”
- Symbol: “Something representing some material of another even having no meaning or relationship”

Pakistan Air Force Insignia
- There are different branches of Pakistan Air Force where different types are being used and decorated at PAF uniform, rather those are Officers, or Airman / Airwoman.
- These shows the relationship of a person with particular Air Force Branch or some specific Course that a person did during service tenure.
- Pakistan Air Force Ranks were being followed by British Air Force (Royal Air Force) in which a massive change was brought in 2006 by changing the pattern of Insignia with Turkish Style Insignia.
- Following some examples are used for showing a particular relationship with specific branch of Pakistan Air Force. Like “PAF shows General Duty Pilot Branch, “Edu” represent PAF Officers of Education Branch / Religious Branch, “IT” represents Information Technology branch, and “Log” shows the relationship with Logistic branch.
- Moreover, “E” shows the relationship with Pakistan Air Force Engineering branch, “AD” shows the relationship with Air Defence branch, “A” shows relationship with Admin, Jag, Metrology, and Account branch, “Med” shows the relationship with Medical branch where specialists also use this pattern.
